They were cool because they were a performance car thing, but now everything can do them and they’re drastically uncool. They sound like shi t.
I actually think they’ve changed the way people drive these cars. What used to be about holding a gear and revving out, is now about mashing your foot until it farts then letting off
. It’s what I hear from Barkers Road out
my window which I like to keep open, it’s obnoxious and it makes me Very Angry.

Agree. Probably the biggest thing I disagree on with The Straight Pipes. No idea why they’re suck suckers for artificial pops when letting off the throttle.

Time to practice really quick clutch-shifter coordination such that I, too, will be able to execute the “shart,” or shift-fart.

INCOMING HOT TAKE ALERT!!!! They were never a performance thing and they were n ever cool. They were always what loud exhaust is always about, people trying desperately to feel cool and get attention.

I thought it was all based on old carby driven race cars and such. There was a time when a crackly exhaust meant something.
It might have meant an overly rich fuel mixture but still. Cool cars did it and boring cars didn’t.

They’re a lot more fun when you’re the one making them.

Not really. My first car, a 72 Gran Torino, was slow as shit but it had a loud exhaust. My friend’s 72 Chevelle was slow as shit but had a loud exhaust. This is back in the early 80s. If you’re talking about the original factory exhaust then maybe it signaled a performance image, but the first thing that people modify is their exhaust and it isn’t to make it quieter.

It’s more of a turbocharged thing. Gotta have it slightly rich to prevent it going boom. Get’s even richer when shifting.
The snap, crackle, pop when off throttle is more of a carb thing, and occurs because you’re on the edge of running lean (moar power) which causes you to run a tad lean when off throttle.

How a bout awesome noises instead?

counter point: these actually are performance cars. 350+hp in a tiny little hatch?

Yes, you are right. But it’s still an engineered in piece of obnoxiousness that I’m not happy with. It’s not a consequence of it being a performance car, it’s a bit of tinsel added to convince you it’s a performance car. It’s not so different to playing cool car sound effects out of the speakers.

yes it is pumped in to some extent. I dig it if its not too crazy.
Then again, I also like my motorcycles to spit fire and flames on upshifts and deceleration so i might not be the best person for this discussion.
